US sales of video game consoles and software have grown 57% over the past year, defying the economic downturn.

Consumers snapped up consoles, games and accessories worth $1.7bn during March, according to research firm NPD.
Nintendo’s Wii came top with 720,000 units. Microsoft sold 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles, ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3 which found 257,000 customers.
“You’d never know the US economy was under distress by looking at the sales figures,” said NPD’s Anita Frazer.

In a statement to the press, Take-Two Interactive Software, the distributor of Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) and other titles, has announced of their plans to expand into Asia Pacific markets, namely Japan, China, and Korea.
Spearheading this project at his new position as Take-Two Interactive’s President for Asia is Hubert Larenaudie, an experienced senior executive who has worked in senior roles with Electronic Arts and Vivendi Universal Games.
Take-Two Interactive Software has set up quite a number of goals that they feel are imperative for them to accomplish in the region. Among these include expanding distribution in the Asia Pacific (APAC) for the Company’s interactive entertainment products, developing a strong presence in Japan, and establishing a meaningful online game operation, especially in China and Korea.
It might be interesting to wait and see if this move pays off for Take-Two Interactive since most of the games they’ve released seem to be targeted to western audiences.

EA Games’ Need For Speed franchise may have taken a turn stylistically with Need For Speed: ProStreet, but the company believes that its impact on the gaming business will be similar to that of its predecessors. EA Says that NFS: ProStreet should hold the top spot for the holiday season, like most of its predecessors.
“A Need for Speed game has been Christmas number one for four of the last five years, with FIFA only pipping it to the post last year in a debatable count back,” says Steve Farrell, senior product manager at EA.
To ensure that Need for Speed: ProStreet rules all other titles in the season of giving, EA plans to throw some major investments in a PR campaign to drum up support for the title’s launch. This EA speedster is due out on November for a worldwide release on the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PC, Sony PSP, mobile, and Nintendo DS. Farrell concludes:
“We are confident the increased quality of the game this year – as well as our extensive marketing campaign, with support throughout the run-up to Christmas – will help to re-establish a Need For Speed game at number one.”

Nollenberger Capital Partners’ analyst Todd Greenwald has stated that Call of Duty 4 could outsell Halo 3. Straight from the horse’s mouth:
“Thus far, the game has an average score of 9.5/10 on Metacritic.com, which is almost unprecedented and puts it on par with Halo 3. It certainly is the highest-rated game Activision has ever created. Keep in mind, CoD4 is launching on four times as many platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation3, PC, DS) as Halo 3 (360 only). Halo 3 has so far sold about 4 million units. A year ago, Call of Duty 3 sold about 3 million units, and we anticipate this year’s version could do four million or more.”
