US sales of video game consoles and software have grown 57% over the past year, defying the economic downturn.

Consumers snapped up consoles, games and accessories worth $1.7bn during March, according to research firm NPD.
Nintendo’s Wii came top with 720,000 units. Microsoft sold 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles, ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3 which found 257,000 customers.
“You’d never know the US economy was under distress by looking at the sales figures,” said NPD’s Anita Frazer.

Several UK online retailers have already sold through their initial allocations of Wii Fit, and have stopped taking pre-orders for any future copies.
Amazon.co.uk. Shopto.net, Play.com, Game.co.uk, and Zavvi.co.uk all point to “massive demand” as the reason they can’t take any more orders, reports Videogaming247.
Nintendo suggests that UK Wii owners who want to be more aware of their bodies should “shop around to secure their copy” of Wii Fit.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure we have as much stock as possible coming into the UK and Ireland not just at launch, but continually, to try and minimise any potential disappointment as much as possible,” said Nintendo.

If superstars Mario and Sonic signed for Sega’s Olympics, then actual star athletes with superb records will carry the torch in Beijing 2008: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PC). Sega has announced that for its next sports fest, U.S. gold medal contenders are going to represent as they’ll appear on the upcoming game’s cover.
Through press wire, Sega announced that former 14-year-old champ swimmer turned FHM favorite Amanda Beard is going to grace Beijing 2008: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games’ box, together with “Fastest Man on Earth” contender Tyson Gay, gymnast prodigy Nastia Liukin, and shot putter Reese Hoffa.
Aside from the cream of the crop representing it, Beijing 2008 also boasts of realistic visuals for the authentic feel of over 35 events across next-gen platforms. It must be said that Sega has set the record for the highest number of events in all Olympic games, and intends to raise the bar by bringing online play features for the first time.
